چکیده
16 Recent reports from Australia suggest that cobalt chloride is being used in racehorses 17 competing in New South Wales and Victoria. Although these are the first such reports, it is 18 suspected that cobalt chloride may have been used illegally for some time. Cobalt chloride is 19 a well-established hypoxia mimetic that is used experimentally to stabilise hypoxia-inducible 20 factor 1 (HIF-1) at the cellular level. It can induce hypoxia-like responses, increase blood 21 erythropoietin (EPO) levels, promote erythropoiesis and enhance the oxygen carrying 22 capacity of blood. However, prolonged administering large quantities of cobalt salts can lead 23 to serious health problems such as cardiomyopathy. Supraphysiological doses of cobalt 24 chloride may result in systemic cytotoxicity, myocardial dysfunction and acute inflammatory 25 responses in the myocardium leading to cardiac arrest and death. In this paper we review the 26 current evidence for the illicit use of cobalt chloride in racehorses. There are genuine 27 concerns that non-veterinarians are sourcing misleading information from the internet as 28 there are websites claiming that cobalt chloride can improve equine health and performance. 29 It is the duty of veterinary surgeons working in the racing industry to ensure that owners, 30 trainers and race officials are aware of the dangers of ‘amateur’ use of a potentially fatal 31 compound. 32 (202 words in abstract) 33 34

Effect of Intravenous Administration of Cobalt Chloride to Horses on Clinical and Hemodynamic Variables
BACKGROUND Cobalt chloride (CoCl2 ) is administered to racehorses to enhance performance. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical, cardiovascular, and endocrine effects of parenterally administered CoCl2 . OBJECTIVES To describe the effects of weekly intravenous doses of CoCl2 on Standardbred horses. ANIMALS Five, healthy Standardbred mares. METHODS Prospective, randomized,...
متن کاملCobalt chloride administration in athletes: a new perspective in blood doping?
Blood doping is an illegal and unfair way of enhancing athletic performance by increasing the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood. Currently used methods usually involve stimulation of erythropoiesis. Gene therapy targeting the hypoxia inducible factor pathway may be an attractive alternative to traditional blood doping techniques. Hypoxia activates a large number of genes with essential role...
متن کاملThe effect of priming on physiological and biochemical traits of French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) under cobalt chloride stress
Extended Abstract Introduction: The germination stage ensures the durability, establishment, and final yield of plants. The final density of plants per unit area is resulted when the planted seeds germinate fully and with adequate rate. Plants mainly undergo abiotic stresses that are a considerable constraint for agricultural production worldwide. Seed priming is one of the simplest and cheap...
متن کاملBlood doping by cobalt. Should we measure cobalt in athletes?
BACKGROUND Blood doping is commonplace in competitive athletes who seek to enhance their aerobic performances through illicit techniques. PRESENTATION OF THE HYPOTHESIS Cobalt, a naturally-occurring element with properties similar to those of iron and nickel, induces a marked and stable polycythemic response through a more efficient transcription of the erythropoietin gene. TESTING THE HYPO...

We present a study of the structural and thermomechanical properties of lyotropic phase in the quasi ternary system made of Cetylpyridinium chloride (CPCl)/hexanol/salt water (0.9 % by mass) with and without cobalt microparticles. Phase transition temperatures of the structural sequence isotropic L 1/nematic calamitic Nc ,/hexagonal H have been determined by differential scanning microcalorimet...
